What is a Domain Name?
A domain name is your website name. A domain name is the address where Internet users can access your website. A domain name is used for finding and identifying computers on the Internet. Computers use IP addresses, which are a series of number. However, it is difficult for humans to remember strings of numbers. Because of this, domain names were developed and used to identify entities on the Internet rather than using IP addresses.
A domain name can be any combination of letters and numbers, and it can be used in combination of the various domain name extensions, such as .com, .net, .co.zw and more.
The domain name must be registered before you can use it. Every domain name is unique. No two websites can have the same domain name. If someone types in www.yourdomain.com, it will go to your website and no one else’s.
What Is Web Hosting?
Web hosting, also known as “online” or “internet hosting” is a service that consists of a disk space to put your website online, so that it can be permanently accessed on the internet.
Most people understand the basic principles of setting up a small business – establish an appropriate business name, rent a shop space, move in, and decorate.
Web hosting is not much different. A registrant establishes a domain name, leases a block of server space, and uploads their webpage. Very quickly, anybody with a connection to the Internet can start browsing the site.
A domain name provides the address of the server, while the server is a rented space into which the data that make up the webpage is stored. This process is known as delegation — the domain name points to the specific hosting account on the particular server.
The server’s main job is to ‘serve’ files to the web browser that made the request. And in the same way as property is managed by a landlord, the server is managed by a web host.

Can I buy a domain name without web hosting?
While they both work together, the domain name and the web hosting service are two different things and each function in different ways.
A domain name can be purchased without web hosting. These domains are considered ‘parked’ until such time as their name servers are delegated (or pointed) to a web host.So you can buy domain names from WebZim and use another web hosting company. Advanced DNS records of the domain can also be used to point to other servers, although the IP address must be known. It may also be redirected to another domain name.
How long will it take to activate my domain?
All domain names are activated within 24 hours.
Will my domain name be approved?
The CO.ZW registry is managed by Zimbabwe Internet Service Providers Association (ZISPA) and is not an open registry such as .COM where it is simply a matter of first come, first served. All applications are vetted in accordance with the following policies:
Known company/organisation names will not be registered without authority from the body concerned. For example, you cannot register google.co.zw without authorisation from Google. In case of doubt, ZISPA may request proof of company registration.
Names of schools, clubs, churches etc must be registered in the name of those organisations, not of individuals.
Zimbabwean place names are reserved for the use of the corresponding national or local government authority
So as long as the domain name is not against the terms and conditions of ZISPA, it will be approved.
